Create a wordpress page template with it's own right sidebar

I have read previous questions about the subject but I do not know where to put this register_sidebar function in the function page.

Could you walk me through creating a new page template under wordpress with it's own sidebar on the right?

I am at my new blank page template: event-pages.php My new sidebar is called events. I need now to understand what come next? I tried to mess with function.php then my website cease to exist/load on Internet.
